SIEDC's annual Health & Wellness Expo is back this year at the College of Staten Island. The event, scheduled for November 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., will feature nearly two dozen FREE medical screenings, free educational seminars and discussions on important wellness topics, fitness demonstrations, and a large Resource Fair of businesses in related fields. Plus, presenting sponsors Councilman David Carr, Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital will present the annual "Health Hero" awards to islanders making a difference in the health and well being of residents.

Community Health Hero

Louise Steward, MS, RNC - Nurse Manager, Labor & Delivery, Perinatal Safety, Richmond University Medical Center

Louise Magnuski Steward has a considerable stake in the wellness of our local society. She is a life-long Staten Islander who was raised in a large West Brighton family and who in turn raised her children in the same beloved community. She is one of several family members who pursued careers in Nursing. Louise became employed at St. Vincent's Medical Center, now Richmond University Medical Center, as a summer worker in the 1970s. She graduated from St. Vincent's School of Nursing, earned a Master's Degree at the College of Staten Island and received a Post Master’s Certificate in Nursing Administration from Villanova University. She is the Nurse Manager in the Labor and Delivery Unit at Richmond University Medical Center. With a passion for perinatal safety, Louise participates in collaboratives with New York City and New York State agencies to improve outcomes. She is most proud of the work done to achieve Baby Friendly USA designation and works to increase breastfeeding rates consistent with Healthy People 2030 goals set by the national Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. She is dedicated to understanding and addressing social determinants of health and health disparities in our community in order to provide culturally compassionate care to Staten Island families. 

Philip Matteo Community and Civil Service Award

Dr. Ginny Mantello - Director of Health & Wellness, Office of the Staten Island Borough President

Dr. Ginny Mantello has been the Director of Health & Wellness for the Staten Island Borough President’s Office since 2014 and an Attending Neuroradiologist at Montefiore Medical Center for over 25 years. She is responsible for launching landmark initiatives like the Medical Ecosystem for the Staten Island Community Organizations Active in Disaster (SI COAD/MES) and co-led the Staten Island Asthma Coalition and Child Wellness Initiative. Dr. Mantello collaborates with public health agencies, hospitals, and community partners on Medicaid reform, population health, and health equity. Her focus is on prevention and early intervention for chronic diseases like asthma, diabetes, and behavioral health, particularly for vulnerable populations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led the local COVID-19 Incident Command System and focused on vaccine education for underserved groups. She has also promoted preventive screenings, cancer education, and healthy lifestyle programs in schools and the community. In 2021 and 2022, she played a key role in Staten Island's vaccine rollout. Dr. Mantello has conducted numerous webinars to address vaccine hesitancy and health concerns.

Her work during the pandemic and beyond has been crucial in supporting disproportionately affected populations. These efforts, coupled with her extensive career helping to eliminate barriers to care, have earned her local and statewide accolades.

Health & Wellness Expo Sessions

9:00 a.m. - NAVIGATING MEDICARE

Seniors and those assisting seniors with Medicare issues are invited to join this session to learn the ins and outs of selecting a plan, the differences between plans, and details about programs which can save seniors substantial amounts on doctor, hospital and prescription copays. The program is being presented by Carmelo DeFranco of NYC Business Group.

Presenters:

Carmelo DeFranco – Insurance Professional

Carmelo Defranco grew up on Staten Island and has grown both his family and his business here. Following a collegiate career at St. John’s University, Carmelo launched a finance career on Wall Street where he worked his way up through various well known investment houses securing Series 7, 63, 24, and 65 licenses. The stock market crash in 2000 made him realize the need for a more stable career, and that set the wheels in motion for him to create his own business in a different field. After his 2006 wedding, he and his wife Rosa launched NYC Business Group, a full-service insurance agency offering property insurance, general liability, workers compensation, and group medical insurance.

Today, the Better Business Bureau-recognized firm is celebrating their 20th year in business, 13 of which have been at their current location in Travis. They have a full staff of insurance professionals and a growing list of individual and commercial clients.

One of Carmelo’s largest books of business is focused on Medicare and insurance policies for seniors and the disabled. When asked about the secret to his success, Carmelo says simply, “I answer the phone. I always answer the phone to help!”

10:00 a.m. - DEBUNKING HEART HEALTH MYTHS

“It’s a man’s disease.” “But I’m too young.” “Breast cancer is the real threat.” If you’ve heard or said any of this before, you’re not alone. The real fact is, relying on these false assumptions can cost you your life. It’s time to set the record straight and start thinking of heart disease as a disease that doesn’t spare anyone. Your health is non-negotiable; we need to separate fact from fiction. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, with one person dying every 34 seconds from cardiovascular disease. This panel, hosted by Richmond University Medical Center, will focus on debunking some of the myths and misconceptions about cardiovascular health.

Presenters:

Francesco Rotatori, MD, FACC – Chief, Cardiovascular Department

Dr. Rotatori graduated from medical school at the University of Milan in Italy. He followed up his education with postgraduate training at the Centro Cardiologico Monzino, a prestigious medical center in Milan that specializes in cardiovascular disease. He later attended the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate College of Medicine. Dr. Rotatori has earned board certification in Internal medicine, Cardiovascular disease, Interventional cardiology, Echocardiography, and Nuclear cardiology.

Fiona Shehaj, MD – Chief, Women’s Cardiovascular Health

Dr. Shehaj first graduated from the SUNY Downstage College of Medicine. She then went on to finish her residency with the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. She completed her postgraduate training and gained her fellowship in cardiology at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, serving as chief fellow during her final year. Dr. Shehaj has achieved board certified in Internal Medicine At Richmond University Medical Center, Dr. Shehaj specializes in women’s heart health. She provides expert management for heart failure, works with advanced cardiac imaging, and continues to educate medical students and residents.

11:00 a.m.  - GAINING HEALTH THROUGH MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS

Join the experts from Staten Island University Hospital/Northwell Health who can help you make the right lifestyle choices for a healthier you.  Learn about various treatment options that make lasting and healthy weight loss a reality including options such as dietary planning, behavioral modification, pharmacotherapy, and surgery all of which help individuals achieve weight loss goals.

Presenters:

Olivia Haney, MD -  Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgeon

Dr. Olivia Haney came to New York City from Tennessee. She is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and UTHSC Medical School. She went on to complete her general surgery residency in Chattanooga, TN where she honed her surgical skills. She then travelled to Staten Island for a Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery Fellowship. She fell in love with the patients and the staff at Staten Island University Hospital and decided to make it her permanent home. She enjoys connecting with her patients on a personal level while offering them the latest in surgical techniques. She performs a wide range of general surgical procedures, including minimally invasive hernia and gastrointestinal surgeries (such as stomach, small intestine, and gallbladder surgery.) Her primary focus is laparoscopic and robotic Bariatric Surgery (including sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass.)

Shiara Ortiz-Pujols, MD - Medical Weight Loss Attending Physician 

Dr. Shiara Ortiz-Pujols joins the Northwell Health family after most recently serving as the Medical Director of Obesity Medicine at MedExpress/Optum Health. She helped develop and grow a national comprehensive medical weight loss program focused on whole-person care, which was offered as an employee benefit.

She completed her undergraduate studies at Yale University. She then went on to receive her MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and her MPH at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health. She continued her training as a United Health Group Clinical Scholar in Obesity Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, under the mentorship of Dr. Louis Aronne.
Her post-medical training includes training in surgery, preventive medicine/population health, and obesity medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is board-certified in Public Health & General Preventive Medicine, Obesity Medicine, and Lifestyle Medicine.

12:00 p.m. - LET’S TALK ABOUT DIABETES

Over 1.8 million adults in New York State have been diagnosed with diabetes and every year an estimated 92,000 more adults in New York State are diagnosed. In this feature, Richmond University Medical Center’s board certified endocrinologist, Philip Otterbeck, MD, discusses this condition that affects just over 11% of the state’s adult population and explains how it can be managed successfully.

Presenter:

Philip Otterbeck, MD – RUMC Chief Medical Officer; Chair, Department of Medicine; and Chief, Endocrinology

A native Staten Islander who was born at RUMC when it was known as St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dr. Otterbeck graduated from New York University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a minor in Russian and Slavic Studies. He earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from SUNY-Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism. In addition to maintaining a large private practice, Dr. Otterbeck is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, St. George’s University, and American University of Antigua.

John P. Reilly, MD – SIUH/Northwell Health - Interim Chair of Orthopedics
John P. Reilly is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and trauma specialist. He is also a clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation at SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine and a consultant for several organizations, including the Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Eger Health Care Center, and Golden Gate Rehabilitation Center. As a leader in his field, Dr. Reilly is Chair of Orthopedics at Staten Island University Hospital, his focus on the team approach to orthopedic surgery, from evaluation to treatment. Dr. Reilly has lectured, presented, and published on a variety of topics, including trends in spine surgery, management of orthopedic trauma, total joint arthroplasty, and injection therapy. Combined with his tenure at Healthcare Associates in Medicine, a division of Orlin & Cohen Medical Specialists Group, Dr. Reilly served as a delegate for the NYS Society of Orthopedic Surgeons and former President of the Medical and Dental staff at Staten Island University Hospital.

Dr. Reilly earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and obtained sub-specialty training in Orthopedic Traumatology at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) in Baltimore, Maryland.

12:30 p.m. - AWARDS CEREMONY: 2024 COMMUNITY HEALTH HEROES AND BATTLE OF THE FITTEST BUSINESS

Celebrate the achievements of Staten Islanders at this awards ceremony free and open to the public.  Several outstanding Islanders will be recognized for their contributions to the well being of the borough with "Community Health Hero" awards.  Staten Island's Fittest Businesses based on a five week long competition will be recognized with awards as well.

Tony Avilez - Owner, The Body House

Tony "Books" Avilez, MES, CSCS, CES, is a leading fitness advisor and lifestyle coach, widely recognized in his field. He holds certifications as a Medical Exercise Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and personal trainer, along with being a certified Health Coach and nutritional consultant. Tony also earned the prestigious Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification. Known for his ability to inspire and motivate, he encourages clients and audiences to embrace exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle changes. He founded Staten Island Slim Down, a 10-week community fitness initiative that has transformed the lives of thousands of participants. Tony has authored five books on health and fitness and has been featured in national publications such as Flex Magazine and Black Enterprise. His expertise has earned him recognition as one of the top 100 fitness professionals in the U.S. Over his 30-year career, he has completed more than 40,000 client sessions. Tony is also celebrated as Staten Island's top personal trainer.

Community Health Hero

Christopher Dowling - Director of Community Engagement of The Village, A Chance In Life

After a 35-year career in retail, sales, information technology, and customer service management, Chris Dowling decided to follow his passion for community work and volunteering in community-based organizations and turned it into the final phase of his working career. Helping young people grow and succeed is both his and A Chance In Life’s mission. Chris loves his position as the Director of Community Engagement for The Village, giving him the opportunity to interact with the residents and other like-minded professionals. He came to A Chance In Life from a collective impact organization, the Staten Island Community Partnership, for which he was Director for four years. That role gave him the foundation to help craft solutions to solve the systemic problems experienced by the most vulnerable children and families in Staten Island and New York City.

Loretta Orelien, RN - Charge Nurse, Constructive Partnerships Unlimited

Loretta Orelien currently serves as Charge Nurse at Constructive Partnerships (CP) Unlimited on Staten Island. She is a bachelor-prepared Registered Nurse providing care, tactfulness, and oversight to adult patients with a range of physical and cognitive disabilities, as well as complex behavioral issues. With a career at CP Unlimited spanning nearly two decades, she is an advocate for decreasing disparities in healthcare by facilitating access to health services for those considered underserved. She is continually motivated to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency in the provision of healthcare and nursing services. A compassionate and skilled communicator, Loretta ensures pertinent information is presented to the clinical care team at CP Unlimited. Additionally, she is a dynamic professional and a lifelong learner devoted to meeting challenges and continuous changes in healthcare. Loretta’s commitment to the field of Nursing is boundless. She continues to further her education, expertise, and service to the community at Rutgers University, where she is studying to earn a master’s degree in nursing informatics.

Staten Islanders are invited to join this ticketed breakfast session for a discussion highlighting today’s emerging health issues and how they impact our borough.  Staten Island’s most dedicated and compassionate “Health Heroes” will also be recognized during the breakfast for their contributions to the health and well-being of Staten Islanders.  Recipients include those professionals identified by Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital/Northwell Health. 

Keynote Speaker

Angel M. Meléndez - Senior Director for Investigations, Americas Region, Pfizer

Mr. Meléndez oversees Pfizer investigations related to product integrity, patient access, fraud, and security in the Americas. He is a retired member of the U.S. Government Senior Executive Service and a Gulf War veteran who served in the U.S. Army. Prior to joining Pfizer, Mr. Meléndez served for 23 years in Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), where he held various key positions, including Special Agent in Charge for Puerto Rico and later for the New York Office.  While in his New York post, he led the largest HSI operation in the United States, playing a crucial role in combating transnational criminal activity.

Dr. Anna Van Tuyl - Associate Chair, Emergency Department, Staten Island University Hospital/Northwell Health

As Associate Chair of the Emergency Department at Staten Island University Hospital, Dr. Anna Van Tuyl recognized a profound need for patients being discharged from the hospital – coordination of follow-up care. Recognizing the challenges patients face in navigating the healthcare system, whether it's choosing the right provider or securing a timely appointment, Dr. Van Tuyl was inspired to create CareBridge, a concierge patient referral program designed to simplify and enhance the patient experience. Launched in 2022, CareBridge addresses this primary problem for patients by connecting them with community practices and assisting in getting them appointments based on their follow-up needs all before they leave the hospital. Since the program’s inception, CareBridge specialists have referred over 30,000 patients through the program from primary care to surgical specialties such as podiatry, urology, and cardiology. Through this initiative, she has helped extend a culture of care far beyond the walls of Staten Island University Hospital. Through Dr. Van Tuyl’s role as Medical Director, CareBridge has expanded to include over 40 specialties in its referral system, creating new opportunities for collaboration and enhancing the breadth of patient care. Dr. Van Tuyl’s dedication to creating a program that focuses on the need of her patients post-discharge is not only a testament to her as a physician but to her profound sense of responsibility toward her community.

Dr. Ana Veronica Mendez - Chief of Ambulatory Pediatrics, Richmond University Medical Center Family Health Clinic

Dr. Ana Mendez is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. She received her medical degree in 1996 from Albany Medical College. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Public Health and Health Care Management from The Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in 2015. She has worked with the community in Staten Island for nearly 30 years. Dr. Mendez is currently the Chief of Ambulatory Pediatrics at Richmond University Medical Center’s (RUMC) Family Health Clinic and is a faculty member in the Pediatrics Department at RUMC. She is also the President of the Richmond County Medical Society for the year 2024 to 2025. For the last decade, Dr. Mendez has also worked closely with multiple community-based organizations to address social determinants of health, advance equity initiatives, and help expand healthcare access.
